Description:
This is my second "proper" album, several years in the making - many of the songs here date to 2004. It wasn't conceived as a cohesive work; these are mostly single songs that fit together well enough to be gathered into an album. After I had written "Crying", I had conceived of making an album of songs like it - an album of computer-made post-rock-style music, with "epic" sound and crescendoes - but never actually made enough other songs to do that. Regardless, that sound crept into a lot of other songs I wrote, and this is intended to be a collection of those songs. Having the benefit of a few years' perspective, I can look back on these songs and still be pretty pleased by them (despite a few failings which, had I really been committed, I would've fixed before releasing, but I've started to think of this as a "warts and all" kind of release - more of a historical document, really). Anyway I hope you like them too.

Description:
More 5dots dubstep, with a throwback flourish: these two tracks are made almost entirely with samples of a Korg Electribe ER-1. A little on the repetitive side, admittedly, but they're made for DJs first and foremost. The mp3 package includes Ableton Live .asd sample analysis files, so you don't even have to warp them.

Due to some significantly unauthorized samples, DJ Shoulder Bag begged me for anonymity when he asked me to put out this single. Baltimore club styled beats, with a hook that you will not be able to resist. The b-side is an instrumental version, which you probably won't care about unless you're a DJ.

Craig contributed this to the 2007 RPM Challenge, meaning it was entirely recorded in February of 2007. Specifically, the first day of February. It's a collection of keyboard instruments playing the same melody, run through a lot of reverb - very droning. And there's a spazzy song, too.

In May of 2005, Craig recorded an album-a-day with Alex Payne, Mike Lojak, and Joe Rezolut. This is the result of that. It's mostly pretty silly, and the last song is terrible.
Melt002 - 5dots - Natural [download: .zip of .wav files]
Description:
Due to the nature of the recording, Natural is only available as a zipped package of 45 wave files. The idea is that you should put these very short sounds into some kind of player that can loop them seamlessly (most wave editors can do this; Ableton Live will also work just fine, though note the original tempo of the loops) and then listen to them for however long you please. Craig had just finished putting together his first record, and wanted to make something a little more freeform - additionally, the 12 year cicadas were in the air, and their buzzing was inspiring.
Melt Records is a netlabel run by Craig Davis. In 2003, I started a physical label with some friends, Adjective Records, and we've been somewhat hamstrung by monetary concerns - in short, it costs money to press a bunch of CDs, and if you don't have the time to do a big touring/publicity push, it isn't really a smart use of your money to get those records pressed.
But I'm still making music, and have gotten really tired of just sitting on it and telling myself "I'll save this for my next record". My next record should be right now, and I am tired of waiting. Melt Records is a vanity label, no doubt (the name is what I had originally wanted to name Adjective), but I'm interested in putting out music that's good by anyone who's interested in giving away good music. So if you are interested in having Melt release your record, please contact me at 5dots at 5dots dot net, and tell me where I can find your music. Please don't attach mp3s to your emails unless I've specifically asked you to.
Additionally, I thought that if I'm going to start a netlabel, I should have it be what I'd like to see in other netlabels. So, to that end, every Melt release will be available in both high quality mp3 and lossless FLAC or .wav formats (so that you've got control over what formats/bitrate you'd like to have them in), and will (probably) include artwork. Select releases may even come pre-warped for use in Ableton Live, for any laptop DJ types. And they'll all be free for the taking.
Lastly, this website is ugly because I'd rather spend time making music. If I have time, I'll make it better. Though I probably won't, because I really expect you to be using the RSS feed and only looking at this when new releases happen. I should also note that the color scheme is Emergy-C. Additionally, you might not have known that the news section is being scraped from Tumblr.
